Nature’s Materials

“Nature’s Poem,” a show of work by Stephanie Joyce that is both inspired by and made from nature, will open at Sara Nightingale Gallery in Sag Harbor with a reception on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. and continue through April 26.

Joyce’s Sag Harbor studio is home to materials gathered from her environment, among them native grasses, pollinator plants, feathers, and handmade papers.

For example, “Nature’s Poem,” her monoprint series, is created using botanical impressions from native pollinator plants such as milkweed, goldenrod, and asters. Those works function as both ecological record and poetic abstraction, according to a release, reinforcing Joyce’s commitment to environmental awareness and preservation.

Chelsea Artists

Cold Castle, one of Chelsea’s last artist communities, took shape from 2006 to 2012 in a 40,000-square-foot building at the corner of West 21st Street and the West Side Highway. While the structure had large studios, a communal kitchen, and no heat for the first four years, it attracted members of the larger art community for exhibitions and events.

Sag Harbor’s Keyes Art, which had a project space on the fourth floor of the building, will open “Through the Red Door: The Artists of Cold Castle” on Saturday with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Featuring work by 28 artists, it will remain on view through May 10.

Still-Life Workshop

Kylee Snow, a figurative artist working primarily in graphite and sculpture, will lead an intermediate still-life drawing workshop at The Church in Sag Harbor next Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Participants will develop their understanding of perspective and the properties of light and shadow.

Snow has asked that attendees take the following items with them: an 18-by-24-inch drawing pad; HB, 2B, and 4B pencils; kneaded eraser; artist chamois; blending stump, and a knife or razor blade for sharpening. An easel is optional.

If assistance is needed to obtain any of the materials, which will be necessary for participation, Samuel Havens, the workshop and residency manager, can be emailed at [email protected].

The cost is $40.

Art as Disruption

“Shake It Up,” a group exhibition that reflects the idea that disruption is integral to art, will open at East Hampton’s White Room Gallery on Friday and run through May 10. A reception will be held April 25 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Featuring work by David Bender, Kat O’Neill, Paul D. Fuentes, Robert Georgio, Rich Bollinger, and others, the show includes work by two abstract artists, graffiti images whose “intent is to shake it up,” according to the curators, and mixed-media works that juxtapose images in unexpected ways. Diamond-dusted icons and photographs of celebrities will also be on view.

Artist Talk

Bruce Lieberman, an artist for whom painting is an ongoing process of discovery, will be at the Bridgehampton Museum’s Nathaniel Rogers house on Saturday afternoon at 3 to lead a free tour of his exhibition there. Lieberman’s work is informed by the people, objects, and natural world he is familiar with, as well as the history of painting itself.

Small Works at Kramoris

A show of small works by more than 35 artists opens Thursday at Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor and will continue through April 30. A reception will happen Saturday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Among the participating artists are Adriana Barone, Thomas Condon, Quincy Egginton, Barbara Groot, Peter Gumpel, Ruby Jackson, Lutha Leahy-Miller, Ghilia Lipman-Wulf, Roger Sichel, and Gayle Tudisco.
