“Materials Speak,” an exhibition of artwork created in or having association with the East End, will open Saturday with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bridgehampton Museum’s Nathaniel Rogers House and continue through May 23. Organized by Mary Dinaburg and Barbara MacAdam, the thread that runs through the show is the varied ways artists use materials.
The show ranges from a map painting by Julian Schnabel to a vivid abstract print by Mary Heilmann. Nina Yankowitz is represented by fabric work, while Claire Watson creates abstractions with leather. A painted wood piece by Russell Maltz transcends the boundary between painting and sculpture. Curtis Mitchell is showing a reconstructed plush toy, and Bonnie Rychlak creates both a painting and an object built of encaustic and other materials.
Through photographic manipulation, Barry Holden, an architect as well as an artist, shows how a chandelier of books would appear in a library. John Torreano’s work includes gems embedded in wood, Drew Shiflett is known for layered collaged paper and fabric constructions that straddle drawing, relief, and sculpture, and Jeanne Silverthorne works with rubber and phosphorescent pigment.
The other participating artists are Sydney Albertini, Suzanne Anker, David Kennedy Carter, Philippe Cheng, Eric Dever, Hiroyuki Hamada, Brianna Hernandez, Dennis Hollingsworth, Mel Kendrick, Debbie Ma, Candace Montgomery, Joel Perlman, David Row, Brie Ruais, Bastienne Schmidt, Mark Van Wagner, and Almond Zigmund.
