‘Life of Pi’

Up next in the National Theatre Live series at Guild Hall is “Life of Pi,” a production based on Yann Martel’s 2001 novel and filmed live on London’s West End in 2023. It will be shown Saturday at 7 p.m.

Adapted from the novel by Lolita Chakrabarti and directed by Max Webster, the Olivier Award-winning play stars Hiran Abeysekera as Pi, a 16-year-old boy who is stranded on a lifeboat with four other survivors after a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The survivors are a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Royal Bengal tiger.

“Yann Martel’s story is kept intact, and the stage version of it is very true to the book,” said Megan Choritz in a review of the production for WeekendSpecial, an arts and lifestyle website. “Hiran Abeysekera as Pi is miraculous. He is physical, emotional, funny, crazed, heart breaking, and utterly convincing as he endures the extraordinary retelling of the story of being lost at sea with a tiger for over 200 days.”

Tickets are $20, $18 for members.

Jazz and More

“Rhythms of the Americas,” a program rooted in Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz, will bring five acclaimed musicians to Sag Harbor’s Masonic Temple on Friday at 7 p.m.

Presented with Hamptons JazzFest, the performance features Bill O’Connell on piano; Essiet Okon Essiet on bass; Juanga Lakunza on trombone; Larry Bustamante on baritone saxophone, and Claes Brondal, the M.C., on drums.

Admission is $20. Doors will open at 6:30 for dinner offerings from Tapovana Lunch Box.

The temple has obtained a beer and wine license, with drinks available for members and their guests. Annual membership is $20, good through Dec. 31.

Horticultural Books

The Winter Book Group of the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons will meet via Zoom on Saturday morning at 11. The format usually features three books selected and described by a member of the alliance, often with accompanying slides.

This month’s books are “The Well-Tempered Garden” by Christopher Lloyd, presented by Nancy Gilbert; “The Layered Garden: Design Lessons for Year-Round Beauty From Brandywine Cottage” by David L. Culp with Adam Levine, presented by Scott Sottile, and “The Wardian Case: How a Simple Box Moved Plants and Changed the World” by Luke Keogh, presented by Alan Zeigler.

Say Cheese (or Caviar), Day or Night

Self Provisions, a storefront attached to Cavaniola’s Gourmet Cheese in Sag Harbor, is “always open,” as is proclaimed by an illuminated sign on the wall at the entrance. Two large, brightly lit vending machines dominate the space, with offerings ranging from sea salt crackers and slabs of French butter to jars of caviar and curated gift boxes — and, of course, cheese.
