“Pattern Is a Habit,” a solo show of clay sculptures, works on paper, and functional objects by Elisabeth Kley, will open at the Drawing Room in East Hampton with a reception on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. and continue through Sept. 29.
Geometric and botanical motifs are often juxtaposed within a single object. The layered brushwork of glazes and stains that enhances Ms. Kley’s bisque-fired terra-cotta vessels and sculpture is sometimes articulated with sgraffito, a pottery technique that involves carving through slip or underglaze.
Sources of the artist’s inspiration range from ancient Asian, Greek, Roman, and Egyptian civilizations to early-20th-century Wiener Werkstätte designs, and costumes created by Léon Bakst for the Ballets Russes.
