April Gornik on Egon Schiele

Last month, in connection with its current exhibition, “Egon Schiele: Living Landscapes,” the Neue Galerie in Manhattan invited April Gornik to deliver a lecture there.

She spoke on “Schiele Landscapes in a Contemporary Context.” Those who may have missed her talk are in luck, because Ms. Gornik, a co-founder of The Church in Sag Harbor, will deliver an encore presentation there on Saturday afternoon at 4.

Although Schiele died in 1918 at the age of 28, his highly expressive drawings and paintings are considered defining works of the Austrian Expressionism movement. His focus on landscape was less prolific and is not as well known as his figurative work, but his writings and poetry make clear that nature was as important to him as humanity.

In her lecture, which includes images and insights into landscape painting as a contemplation of nature at large, Ms. Gornik will focus on both Schiele’s contemporary context and on more recent artists whose work reflects his influence.

Tickets are $10, $5 for members of The Church.
