Spacek's Scrimshaw in Sag

Mon, 09/25/2023 - 16:18
A selection of works by Peter Spacek, many created from repurposed surfboards, is at Estia's Little Kitchen in Sag Habor

Talk about repurposing! Peter Spacek's exhibition at Estia's Little Kitchen in Sag Harbor, which is up through December, includes creations made from discarded surfboards or pieces of them, and 14 scrimshawed drawings, or etchings, on fiberglass peeled off from old boards and adhered to wood.

The installation also includes panels that reflect what the artist feels are surfing's most interesting moments: the drop, the bottom turn, and the take-off. Finally, a collection of Mr. Spacek's recent cartoons from The Star, as well as a few older ones, are on view.

Colin Ambrose, the restaurant's chef-owner, purchased a collection of the artist's surfboard scrimshaw etchings earlier this year, and that was the inspiration for the show.

Really, really big.
