A Programming Potpourri at The Church

Mon, 07/31/2023 - 15:11

Please note: the following has been updated to remove the Deborah Roberts talk planned for Saturday, which has been canceled.

The Church in Sag Harbor will pivot this week from film to visual art to books to printmaking to jazz, starting Friday when the Knowledge Friday series welcomes Susan Lacy, a documentary filmmaker who founded the PBS series "American Masters."

As its executive producer, Ms. Lacy earned the series 27 Emmy Awards. She directed and produced documentaries on Leonard Bernstein, Judy Garland, David Geffen, Lena Horne, John Lennon, and many others, before leaving "American Masters" for a production deal with HBO, for which she has directed and produced "Spielberg" (2017), "Jane Fonda in Five Acts" (2018), and "Very Ralph" (2019).

The program will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10, free for members, who are required to R.S.V.P.

Janet Wallach's book "Flirting With Danger," just published by Doubleday, tells the true story of Marguerite Harrison, a wealthy socialite who spied for U.S. military intelligence in Russia and Germany between the world wars.

Ms. Wallach will be at The Church on Sunday at 2 p.m. to discuss the book and the writing experience with Dini von Mueffling, a Church board member. Ms. Wallach has written 10 books, including a historical novel, three on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and four on influential women.

Tickets are $20, $10 for members.

The Church has announced a new workshop, advanced monotype  printmaking, to be held on Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m. The courses are only open to participants who have taken a minimum of two introductory workshops. Tickets, which are $200 and likely to sell out quickly, will go on sale on Sunday morning at 7:45.

Hamptons Jazz Fest will return to The Church next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. with a performance by the Matt Wilson Quartet. Mr. Wilson, a drummer and bandleader, was named 2018 Musician of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, which also named his "Honey and Salt" its Album of the Year.

He has released thirteen albums as a leader, and as a sideman he has played with Wynton Marsalis, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Dewey Redman, and Lee Konitz, among others.

Tickets are $30, $25 for members, and $15 for students.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
