In Montauk, Music for Love

Mon, 05/29/2023 - 13:42
Ani Kalayjian, a cellist, will perform in Music for Montauk's spring concert at the Montauk School.

Love is in the air at The End, as Music for Montauk begins its 2023 season with "Spring Concert: Songs and Romances," a free program at the Montauk School auditorium, on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The concert will feature a whimsical mix of chamber music, songs, and new works by Barbara Strozzi, Philip Glass, Mary Kouyoumdjian, Giacomo Puccini, Benjamin Britten, and others.

The performers are Sarah Fleiss, a soprano; Joseph Tancredi, a tenor; Ani Kalayjian, a cellist, and Milos Repicky, a pianist, conductor, and the artistic director of Music for Montauk.

The concert will be followed by a reception with the artists at Gosman's Restaurant from 5:30 to 7. Tickets, $35 from the website or $40 at the door, benefit Music for Montauk.

"The spring concert brings the community together in a great way after a long winter," says Lilah Gosman, the organization's executive director. "There's a positive energy and anticipation of what is to come!"

Music for Montauk musicians will play an interactive outreach concert for Montauk School students on Friday afternoon.

The Music for Montauk summer series, which will take place Aug. 5 through Aug. 11, includes a concert at Carl Fisher house, outdoor concerts at Fort Pond House, and Cuban music at the Lighthouse, with details to be announced.

Founded in 1983 as the Montauk Chamber Music Society, the name changed to Music for Montauk in 1991 when producing concerts for the general public became a priority. Ms. Gosman and Mr. Repicky's vision for the program, which provides a fresh and dynamic approach to classical music for everyone, launched in 2015.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
