The Art Scene 04.27.23

Mon, 04/24/2023 - 14:26
Nathan Slate Joseph is at work in this still from Lana Jokel's film "The Way It Goes."

The Ranch Reopens
The Ranch in Montauk will open on Tuesday for its third season with "Nature Wills It," a solo exhibition of sculpture by Lena Henke. The artist, who divides her time between New York City and Berlin, has created a new body of work in response to the Ranch's own history and architecture.

Incorporating leather into her repertoire of materials, the works have associations not only with animals but also with fetish clubs in Berlin and Chelsea, inverted aesthetics of masculinity, and taming. The show, which spans both galleries and includes outdoor sculpture, will be on view through June 14.

Closing Celebration
The Southampton Arts Center will mark the closing of its current show, "East End Collected7," with a screening of Lana Jokel's film about the exhibition artist Nathan Slate Joseph, on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Titled "The Way It Goes," the one-hour film will be followed by a reception.

"The Way It Goes" explores the life and career of Mr. Joseph, whose mixed-media works are statements of destruction and reconstruction, according to the arts center. Composed of rusted sheets of steel and other objects, the pieces are cut, bent, and welded into shapes and wall reliefs.

The exhibition, organized by the artist Paton Miller, features work by more than 40 artists from the region. Admission to the film and reception is free.

East End Abstraction
A solo show of paintings by Anahi DeCanio is at the Lucore Art Gallery in Montauk through May 16, with a reception set for May 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. Ms. DeCanio's working process is intuitive and strongly influenced by her surroundings.

The works in the exhibition are all inspired by the summer and winter environments of the East End. The artist has said, "People often look for objects in my abstract art . . . I look at objects and see abstractions."

Hidden in Gansett
Noah Hideout in Amagansett Square, which features the Noah brand of men's clothing, will open for the season on Saturday with "Wildlife," a group exhibition of artwork by local and international artists, many of whom are collaborators with the brand. The show will run through the fall.

The participating artists are Charlotte Beavers, Scott Bluedorn, Gene Debartolo, Allan Gibbons, Tyler Healy, Brendan Lynch, Mary Maguire, Shane McClatchey, Michael Muller, Chris Rhodes, Casey Steffens, and Colin Sussingham.

A reception will be held Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Say Cheese (or Caviar), Day or Night

Self Provisions, a storefront attached to Cavaniola’s Gourmet Cheese in Sag Harbor, is “always open,” as is proclaimed by an illuminated sign on the wall at the entrance. Two large, brightly lit vending machines dominate the space, with offerings ranging from sea salt crackers and slabs of French butter to jars of caviar and curated gift boxes — and, of course, cheese.
