In collaboration with Tu Prensa Local, a Spanish-language nonprofit media organization serving Suffolk County, The Church in Sag Harbor will celebrate Latinx culture and community with two programs this weekend.

Its Knowledge Friday series, which features outstanding East End residents of varied backgrounds, will welcome Maria del Mar Piedrabuena and Juliana Holguin, the founders and editors of Tu Prensa Local, on Friday at 6 p.m.

Tu Prensa, founded in 2020, specializes in "community-led, public service journalism, seeking to foster civic engagement while building a more inclusive local media," says its website.

Ms. Piedrabuena and Ms. Holguin will discuss the organization, how they undertook it, the challenges they faced, and what they have learned in the process.

Tickets are $10, free for members with registration required.

The Church and Tu Prensa Local will join forces again on Saturday at 6 p.m. with Una Noche Espectacular, a showcase for outstanding local artists of Latinx descent, which will be the first in-person event presented by the media group.

On entry to The Church, guests will encounter an authentic Dia De Los Muertos altar, constructed on its studio floor by Filiberto Perez, a Mexican artist. Guests have been encouraged to take gifts and offerings for the altar to honor their late loved ones.

The program will feature performances by Grupo Folklorico Xochipli, a Mexican dance group devoted to traditional folk culture; Adriana Devers, an award-winning author, poet, and cultural activist born and raised in the Dominican Republic; the Colombian Multicultural Club, a dance group; Duey Meza, an accordionist and singer whose music fuses hip-hop, reggaeton, club, and Colombian folk music, and Mariachi Mexico Juvenil, a mariachi band based in Southampton.

Tickets are $30, $20 for children 12 and under. Food and drink will be on offer.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
