This year’s May Day 5K drew nearly 800 people to Main Beach on Sunday morning for a run and walk that raised money for the youth mental health efforts supported by the Tyler Project.

The 5K was founded in 2021 by two high school students, Ryleigh O’Donnell and Dylan Cashin, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month. It was an instant hit and has gone on to raise tens of thousands of dollars.

The winner was Clive Johnston, and the top female finisher was Kira Garry.

In Sunday’s sunny and blustery conditions, Clive Johnston, 25, of New York was top finisher in a field of 779 in 16:13.17. Erik Engstrom of Amagansett, 27, finished second in 16:44.31, and William Stanton, 30, of East Hampton was thirdvin 16:55.47, running with the Hamptons Run Club. The first-place finisher among women was Kira Garry, 33, of Montauk, who ran the 5K in 18:03.58. Alyssa Bahel, 28, of Sag Harbor came in second in 19:40.89, and Tara Wilson, 39, of Riverhead was third in 20:35.75.

Helping to organize the event were Brad Billet of the East Hampton Village Foundation, Vanessa Rizzo of Pierson High School and Lucy Knight of East Hampton High, and Jenn Fowkes of the Old Montauk Athletic Club.

The Hamptons Run Club had a whopping 83 athletes running with its team on Sunday, the Ross Ravens team boasted 45 members, and the Bonac Bolts youth track club saw 20 members finish the race. Lily Limonius, 12, led the Bolts, finishing in 24:47.20.

Among the hundreds of participants in Sunday’s May Day 5K, 83 ran or walked with the East Hampton Run Club.
