Always the third Saturday in August, the 78th Artists and Writers Charity Softball Game is set for this Saturday in Herrick Park. Last year the Writers snapped a losing streak, winning their first game since 2022, and this year's rematch promises the usual mix of local celebrities, hard-fought innings, and plenty of laughs. Batting practice begins at 12:30 p.m., with first pitch at 2.
Hot dogs, hamburgers, and ice cream will be for sale, along with shirts and hats. Money raised supports the Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center, Phoenix House Academy, the Retreat, and East End Hospice.
The suggested donation is $15 per person, and the rain date is Aug. 22.
