Bonac’s girls track team had its best League IV championship finish since 2023, taking fifth place with 56.25 points on Jan 17. They set 17 personal records and broke two school records at the meet.

“This is not too far off from our best performance, which was in 2023, when we finished in fourth place with 59 points,” the girls’ head coach, Yani Cuesta, said. “Our entire coaching staff is super proud of every single one of our athletes.”

Leah McCarron took second place in the shot put with a personal record of 32 feet, 2.25 inches. That also broke the school record of 31 feet, 10 inches, set by Melina Sarlo in 2024. Angie Castillo also achieved a personal record in the shot put of 15 feet, 10.25 inches.

Sierra Stumpf finished fourth in the high jump, hitting 4 feet, 6 inches. Alessa Picco tied for sixth place hitting 4 feet, 3 inches.

Laura Martinez finished fifth in the 1,000-meter run with a 3:13.55 finish, which was also a personal best.

In the 600-meter run, Sara O’Brien placed second with a personal best time of 1:42.86. Olivia Chapman also ran a personal best time of 2:14.07.

Sophia Figueroa was right behind her, finishing third with a personal record of 9.39. Stumpf also set a new personal record of 10.01.

Three Bonackers set personal records in the 300-meter dash: Alvarez (51.66), Salazar (52.39), and Mantilla (56.78).

Bennett Greene set a personal record of 8:31.88, finishing sixth in the 1,500-meter racewalk.

The 4-by-400-meter relay team of Figueroa, Echavarria, O’Brien, and Martinez took second place with a 4:22.92 finish. And the 4-by-800-meter relay team of Danette Gonzalez-Alcala, Shirley Jiang, Olivia Stiglitz, and Greene finished in 11:48.60, which secured fifth place.

The girls’ next meet is the Zeitler Coaches Classic on Sunday. Coach Cuesta says it’s the last chance for girls to qualify for the small school championship on Jan. 31. The seed meeting for small schools is Jan. 29.
