Half a dozen members of Hamptons Run Club are traveling to Germany this week, joining more than 50,000 international runners for the 51st BMW Berlin Marathon on Sunday. The club meets in East Hampton Village. Most of its members taking part are running to raise money for charity.
Alyssa Bahel, Edwin Garcia, Leidy Jaramillo, and Alison Morris Roslyn are supporting the American Cancer Society. The organization is especially significant to Morris Roslyn, who is running her second marathon since beating breast cancer in 2024.
“I connected with Hamptons Run Club at last year’s half marathon in Southampton a month after I finished radiation,” Morris Roslyn, who lives in East Hampton, said. “I’ve been running with them ever since and never would’ve gotten back to marathon-running shape without them. I’m honored to be running with our local club while raising money to fight cancer.”
Laura Perez is running for Achilles International, which helps athletes with disabilities participate in endurance events.
Magally Montoya secured a place in the marathon through the registration lottery. Historically, only about 20 percent of lottery applicants get a spot in Berlin, but Montoya is a lottery pro. She started running marathons last year after gaining entry to the TCS New York City Marathon. New York typically accepts fewer than 3 percent of its lottery applicants.
“My sister put my name down [for New York] and I got picked, so I had to start running,” Montoya said. “I said if I don’t get picked for Berlin, I’ll stop running. And here I am still training.”
Bahel, a star track athlete who graduated from East Hampton High School in 2015, hopes to beat her best marathon time, 3:10:15, which she set in Paris in May.
Garcia founded the run club in 2021 as a mental health nonprofit. The group meets outside the Lululemon shop on Main Street every Saturday year round. Runners of all abilities are welcome. More information is available on the club’s Instagram account: @hamptonsrunclub.
Morris Roslyn will be reporting for The Star from Berlin on how the local runners do this weekend.
