Whalers Beat Bees for County C-D Title

The Killer Bees of Bridgehampton, a team without a senior on it, celebrated on Feb. 16 one of two county Class D championships that the tiny school has won in the past five years.

The Pierson (Sag Harbor) Whalers and Bridgehampton High’s Bees met in the Suffolk County tournament’s C-D game Saturday at Sachem East High School in Farmingville, with Pierson, as expected, winning, by a score of 81-52, though Will Fujita, Pierson’s coach, said the Bees shot well in the first half, at the end of which the Whalers led 39-31.

Thus Pierson advances to the B-C-D game that is to be played Tuesday at Longwood High School in Middle Island at 4 p.m., according to Section XI’s website. Its opponent, Southampton, the county’s Class B champion, was the only team to beat the Whalers in league play this winter, though that game, which the Mariners won by 10 points, was nip-and-tuck until the final minutes. Fujita said a rematch with Southampton would be “a great game for us when it comes to preparing us for the state tournament.”

Pierson and Carle Place, the Nassau Class C champion, are to play for the Long Island Class C title on March 9, a Wednesday, at 4 p.m. Bridgehampton is to play the Section IX winner in a regional semifinal on March 8 at 5.
