A Southampton man who was arrested Sunday night faces two felony counts and several lesser charges after a boat he was operating struck a stone jetty in Sag Harbor Bay, seriously injuring two of his passengers.
Sag Harbor Village police received a report of the collision shortly after 10 p.m. and met the vessel at a local dock to render assistance, according to a New York State police press release. Peter Mangiameli, 57, was identified as the operator of the vessel, a “2023 35-foot Cruise Boat.” A preliminary investigation determined that the boat was on its way out in the harbor when it struck the jetty, causing significant damage and seriously injuring two of the eight people on board.
Mr. Mangiameli, who was able to dock the vessel after the collision, allegedly left the scene while the injured passengers were receiving medical treatment. They were taken to an unspecified local hospital for treatment of injuries including a broken rib, a leg fracture, and a fractured vertebra.
On Monday, village police requested the assistance of the state police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which took over the case. As a result of that investigation, Mr. Mangiameli was charged, as the operator of the vessel, with failure to report an accident with personal injury and recklessly causing serious physical injury, both felonies; failure to provide identification after a personal injury accident, recklessly causing physical injury, and reckless endangerment, all misdemeanors; recklessly operating a vessel at an unreasonable speed, a violation, and multiple violations of New York State Navigation Law.
He was arraigned in Sag Harbor Village Justice Court on Tuesday morning. The investigation is ongoing; anyone who witnessed the collision or may have additional information has been asked to call the New York State police at 631-756-3300.
