Police are still investigating the cause of a four-car accident on Montauk Highway in East Hampton Village Monday that left two people injured and the road closed for several hours.

East Hampton Village Police Det. Sgt. Jennifer Dunn said last night that police are working to determine if the driver of a Ford pickup who sideswiped and rear-ended two cars before crashing into the back of a garbage truck had suffered a from a medical episode during the accident.

At around 2 p.m. on Montauk Highway near Green Hollow Road police say John Carter, 51, of Huntington side-swiped a Toyota sedan driven by an East Hampton man and then rear-ended a second Toyota sedan driven by a woman from Wading River. He then drove around the second sedan before crashing into the back of a garbage truck owned by Mickey's Carting.

The woman from Wading River, who police have not identified, was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for evaluation. The East Hampton man and the driver of the garbage truck, who police only identified as a 56-year-old man, were uninjured.

Mr. Carter was also taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where his injuries were determined to be not life-threatening.

Police closed the road until 5:30 p.m. while a safety check was performed on the garbage truck. They were also investigating the scene because the severity of Mr. Carter's injuries were not immediately known.
