Deer Broke the Windshield

Thu, 08/21/2025 - 11:22

A Brooklyn man was injured early Saturday evening on Skimhampton Road in Amagansett after his Hertz rental car collided with a deer.

Jamil Mahmoud Nathoo, 46, told East Hampton Town police the animal had jumped out in front of the Ford S.U.V. near the intersection of Eileen’s Path. It hit the driver’s-side front fender, breaking the windshield, he said, and in the impact, his head hit the rearview mirror. He was transported by ambulance to the Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Room for evaluation.

Last Thursday afternoon, also in Amagansett, two S.U.V.s, a Mazda and a Buick, were involved in a collision on Montauk Highway. According to the police report, the driver of the Buick, which was also a rental from Hertz, Muriel Manigk of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, 19, was stopped in westbound traffic near the intersection of Hand Lane when the Mazda, driven by Rosa Ayala of Wainscott, 60, rear-ended it. Ms. Manigk complained of neck pain but refused medical treatment; Ms. Ayala was not injured.

The afternoon before, a Toyota rear-ended a Chrysler near Kirk Park Beach in Montauk. Lei Zhang of Syosset, 47, the Chrysler driver, told police she’d been driving east on Main Street and had stopped at a crosswalk to allow a pedestrian to cross when the Toyota ran into the back of her car. She complained of whiplash, and her 13-year-old passenger reportedly sustained bruising to her back. Both were transported by Montauk E.M.S. to the Stony Brook East Hampton emergency room.

The Toyota was driven by Taylor Grace Jarvis Kerns of San Pedro, Calif., 22, who was not injured. Both cars sustained minor damage.

Passenger on the Midnight Shift

On an unusually quiet overnight shift last weekend, The Star's police reporter rode along with an East Hampton Town officer and got a window into a world where a 911 call can be anything from a mistake to something much worse.

Desperate for the T-Shirt

A 75-year-old New York City woman was arrested by East Hampton Village police on Tuesday afternoon and charged with assault in the third degree and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors, after police identified her as the person who they said had “grabbed” and “bitten” the arm of a 7-year-old child while trying to retrieve a T-shirt tossed from the pavilion balcony during an Aug. 12 concert at Main Beach.
