Overturned by the Overlook

Thu, 07/17/2025 - 10:51

A Brooklyn man was arraigned recently on multiple misdemeanor charges related to a May 25 accident that injured four passengers in his Mercedes S.U.V., according to a just-released police report.

Parvez Jonnie Kalam, 23, was driving that day on Route 27 in Montauk near the West Overlook at an “unsafe, excessively high rate of speed,” when he crossed the double yellow lines, struck a guardrail in the opposite  lane; then crossed back to the shoulder of the original lane and hit a wooden barrier. The car went off the road and down a hill, where it overturned and was extensively damaged. Four female passengers — Jami Taylor Susi, 22, Ertugela Dokaj, 25, Iulia Vykhovanska, 23, and Lillia Keeley Ward, 18 —  complained of minor facial bruises and bleeding, and  were taken to the hospital for treatment. A fifth passenger, Etnik Dervishi, 26, complained of knee pain but declined medical attention.

Asked for his identification, Mr. Kalam told East Hampton Town police that three other passengers were missing from his vehicle, and when they went to look for them he allegedly fled the scene.

One of the injured passengers gave police his name the next week, and he was charged with reckless driving, obstruction of governmental administration, reckless endangerment, first-offense leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, all misdemeanors.

He was arraigned before East Hampton Town Justice David Filer on July 9 and released on his own recognizance, with a return date of July 29.

In the early hours of Saturday, according to town police, a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Danielle E. Answeeney, 21, of Eden, N.Y., crossed the yellow lines on Daniel’s Hole Road in East Hampton near the intersection of Cobber Lane, left the roadway, and collided with a tree. The truck had front-end damage but remained operational, and Ms. Answeeney was not injured, though her passenger, Mackenzie Lynn Erichsen, 23, sustained a minor burn to her chest and was transported by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.
