East Hampton

He was “just out for a walk” on the night of June 18, a Wooded Oak Lane man told officers responding to reports of a suspicious person in the area, before admitting that he’d been going through his neighbors’ mailboxes. He added that he’d been trying to hide his cigarettes from his girlfriend because she disapproves of his smoking, and was told to keep walking and stay away from other people’s mailboxes.

East Hampton Village

A former employee has been stopping by the children’s clothing store The Little regularly, “ranting in front of young employees, demanding discounts, and making purchases that she would later dispute through her credit card,” according to the shop’s manager, who called police on Monday afternoon. An officer contacted the woman and warned her not to return.

A beachgoer heard the alarm of his silver Toyota 4 Runner going off in the Egypt Beach parking lot Friday afternoon and hurried back to his car to find his wallet missing. He’d left the window open, he told police, but was able to track down the wallet using an AirTag device inside it. He found that it still held all its original contents except for $180 in cash, and told the officer he’d seen an “elderly man” in a burgundy Ford sedan in the lot at the time of the alarm.

Montauk

An unknown man standing outside Bambi’s Cafe Friday night told its owner he was “a Templar Knight” and that he owned the business. She told him she was the owner, and went inside and locked the door. When he returned on Saturday night she called police. He repeated to an officer that he was a Templar Knight and that “his organization did own a few buildings in the area.” He was looking for work in Montauk, he added, and had been staying in “random hotels.” He was ordered not to return to Bambi’s, whose owner was advised to call again if he caused any more problems.

As her family was asleep in room 101 of the Montauk Beach House on the night of June 18, a Deer Park woman heard the door unlock and started screaming. An unknown woman then opened the door, the guest told police the next morning, and “said something about not checking into the room,” which she found suspicious, and wanted the incident documented. Police spoke with an employee who’d been working the night before, who said she was the one who’d gone to check on the room — “due to a miscommunication on the hotel’s end,” she told the officer, who then informed the guest of his findings.

Sag Harbor

A young co-worker was trapped in the bathroom of Goldberg’s Bagels, another employee told police on Saturday morning, adding that the lock was broken and they could not open the door. The officer was able to pry the door open using a “Halligan tool” and freed the employee.

The A.T.M. at Dime Community Bank ripped him off Friday morning, a customer reported, only dispensing $80 of the $200 he had requested, and then deducting the full $200 from his account balance. The branch manager told police that the machine had indeed been malfunctioning that morning, and had since been fixed. The customer was advised to report the incident to his bank directly to have the $120 refunded to his account.

Springs

Damaging a $200 window crank on his way in, a Breeze Hill Road man entered a Three Mile Harbor Road residence without permission sometime between 1 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on Friday, according to town police, and took the homeowner’s $100 bottle of Charles Heidsieck Champagne. He was discovered and taken into custody around 7:30 a.m., charged with criminal mischief, trespassing, and petty larceny.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
