Six Drivers Injured in Collisions

Police were kept busy on local roads last week, where six people were injured in the same number of accidents, three of which happened on Friday.

On the afternoon of Oct. 7, a Chevrolet pickup truck overturned after striking a tree by the side of Montauk Highway in Amagansett. E.A. Galdamez Quijada of East Hampton, 22, told police he’d been eastbound on the highway when he “wiped his face with his hand to remove some pool chemicals.” As he did so, the truck drifted off the road, first striking a sign, then hitting a tree and overturning.

The driver was taken by ambulance to the Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Department for treatment of minor bleeding to his arm. The truck sustained damage to its front passenger side, and was removed from the scene by Rapid Recovery of Hampton Bays.

Another driver was injured a few hours later when a Chevrolet van collided with a utility pole in East Hampton. Solange M. Vera Mishquiro of Mastic, 26, was headed east on Floyd Street when, she told police, a bottle fell inside her vehicle, distracting her and causing the van to strike the pole by the roadside. She’d “felt dizzy” while driving, she added, and complained of head pain but refused medical attention. The front end of the van was damaged. Liberty Automotive Repair, which is headquartered on Shelter Island but operates throughout Suffolk County, towed it away.

A Chrysler S.U.V. struck a Ford sedan on Friday morning in Montauk, injuring the Ford’s driver, Jhon Jairo Diaz Peña of Springs. Gemma Fallon of Montauk, 45, told police she’d stopped the S.U.V. at the intersection of South Delrey and Second House Roads to look for oncoming traffic, but did not see the Ford approaching as she proceeded across Second House Road, and ran into the passenger side of the Ford. The front of the S.U.V. sustained some damage but it did not require a tow, and Ms. Fallon and two 16-year-old passengers were not injured.

Mr. Diaz Peña, 56, stated that he’d been northbound on Second House Road when it happened. His Ford “spun around” in the impact and wound up against a split-rail fence. He complained of back, leg, and hip pain, and an ambulance was called to take him to the Emergency Department building. His car sustained damage to the front and passenger sides and was towed by Marshall and Sons of Montauk.

Less than an hour later in Springs, at the intersection of Springs- Fireplace Road and Church Lane, another driver swerved to avoid a deer and injured his back. Dario R. Chicaiza Barros, 34, told police the animal ran out in front of his Jeep pickup truck and that he’d tried to avoid it but could not. He too was transported by ambulance to the Emergency Department for evaluation.

That night, two women from Hewlett were injured when a Toyota sedan collided with a Volkswagen on. Napeague. The VW’s driver, Sarah Alex Rosen, 25, had been headed west on Old Montauk Highway and was turning onto Montauk Highway at its intersection when an eastbound Toyota hit her, she stated.

The Toyota driver, Nancy A. Gutama Gutama of Montauk, 36, told town police that the Volkswagen had pulled out in front of her, and she’d been unable to avoid a collision.

The rear passenger side of the Volkswagen was damaged; Marshall and Sons took it away. Ms. Rosen and her passenger, Rebecca Andi Rosen, 28, were both taken by ambulance to Emergency Department for treatment of minor injuries.

Ms. Gutama Gutama was unhurt.

Volunteers Answer the Call of Duty

“No one wants to get out of bed, having just climbed in. And it’s a really cold night, and it’s windy, and everything else — but you know that everyone else will be feeling the same, and so you go anyway. Everyone jumps in their cars and drives there, and then you deal with whatever is going on.”
