Acting East Hampton Village Chief of Police Jeffrey J. Erickson has passed the Civil Service police chief exam, and will be officially promoted to the rank of chief when the village board meets on Oct. 18. He will become the ninth police chief in the history of the East Hampton Village Police Department.

Mr. Erickson, a member of the department since 1991, has served as acting chief for just over a year.

“I’m very happy and proud that he ís going to be our full-time chief,” said Mayor Jerry Larsen in a phone call. “He ís a longtime friend and colleague, and he’s going to do a terrific job.”

“It’s been a true privilege to work alongside Captain Erickson over the last four years,” said Marcus Baladron, the village administrator,” who cited the new chief’s “outstanding leadership skills.”

“He gets the job done,” Mr. Baladron added, “and no one cares more about the safety of the men and women of the department than Jeff Erickson. As many of our residents and employees already know, it’s a pleasure to deal with the guy.”

Mr. Erickson took the Civil Service exam back in March, but the agency reported the results months later than usual, according to Mayor Larsen.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
