Felony Charges Are Levied

An East Hampton man was arrested last week on a charge of third-degree criminal mischief, a class-E felony.

On the morning of Oct. 1, town police said, Victor Manuel de Avila Angulo, 26, smashed a table at home “with his left hand,” causing $500 worth of damage.

East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky arraigned the man the following day, releasing him without bail per New York State bail reform laws. He is to be back in Justice Court on Oct. 31.

A Setauket woman facing the same felony charge, this time for drug possession, is also scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 31. Tamara Cass, 40, was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan on Accabonac Road near Collins Avenue, on the night of Sept. 30, when village police pulled her over for having a license plate marked “transporter,” which is reportedly valid only in Florida.

After a search of the vehicle, police allegedly determined that its registration had been suspended in New Hampshire. During the stop, officers said, they saw used and unused needles, a glass smoking pipe, needle caps, and a white “rock-like” substance in various spots throughout the car. A field test of the substance was positive for cocaine.

Ms. Cass was taken to police headquarters to await arraignment the next day, at which time she was released on her own recognizance. Hammer Towing took her vehicle away and police impounded it.

Volunteers Answer the Call of Duty

“No one wants to get out of bed, having just climbed in. And it’s a really cold night, and it’s windy, and everything else — but you know that everyone else will be feeling the same, and so you go anyway. Everyone jumps in their cars and drives there, and then you deal with whatever is going on.”
