First D.W.I. Offenses Are Alleged

Thu, 08/04/2022 - 08:14

Three people were charged with drunken driving on local roads within the last two weeks.

Out on routine patrol on July 25, an East Hampton Village police officer made a traffic stop that resulted in two charges of driving while intoxicated and four traffic violations. Oscar Jacinto Mateo of East Hampton, 20, was reported to be unsteady on his feet and smelling of alcohol when his 2004 Hyundai was pulled over near the corner of Newtown Lane and Railroad Avenue at around 5:30 p.m. A breath test produced a blood-alcohol reading at or above .18 of 1 percent, police said, leading to an aggravated D.W.I. allegation on top of a first-offense charge. Both are misdemeanors. He was arraigned the next morning.

Jose Alfaro of Bay Shore, 44, is facing the same two misdemeanor charges after being stopped on Main Street on July 27 shortly after 5 a.m. Police first noticed a broken taillight, according to a report. Mr. Alfaro told officers he'd had three beers and "some tequila," before he was arrested. At headquarters, he consented to both a breath test and a chemical test, leading to the aggravated D.W.I. charge. He had been driving a heavyweight vehicle with a trailer; it was impounded for "multiple violations" after failing a safety inspection. Mr. Alfaro was to be arraigned yesterday by Justice Lisa Rana.

Sarah Scribner, 35, was also charged with two misdemeanor first-offense D.W.I. charges. Police stopped her 2022 Volkswagen early on July 17 on Montauk Highway near Abraham's Path in East Hampton, saying that she'd failed to dim her bright lights for oncoming vehicles. Ms. Scribner, whose car was registered in Connecticut, provided officers with an East Hampton address. She was arraigned later that day and has a future court date with Justice Steven Tekulsky.
