Two Bicyclists Were Injured

Thu, 07/29/2021 - 11:57

Two bicyclists, one of them a teenager who was later treated at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, were hit by cars in recent weeks.

Oscar Sandoval, a Montauk 17-year-old, was hit on Lincoln Road there at about 9:45 a.m. on July 19. Jackson Bower, 26, also of Montauk, who was driving a 2017 BMW on Madison Road, told East Hampton Town police he was watching an oncoming car about to turn onto that road, and did not see the bicyclist at the Lincoln Road intersection. The teenager sustained bruises to his head and face.

Jeffrey Cook-McCormac, 42, of New York City got a bloody elbow from a collision at midday July 16, after riding into a 2019 Mercedes driven by Romulo Albarracin-Gutama, 39, of East Hampton. Mr. Cook-McCormac told police the car turned in front of him before he had time to stop. He declined a trip to the hospital.

A rear-end collision in Montauk caused a three-car domino effect on Montauk Highway near Shipwreck Drive on Saturday at around 6 p.m. J Rodriguezcastro, 27, of Port Jefferson drove his 2012 Honda into a 2020 Jeep driven by Luis Torresnolasco, 23, of Brentwood, who then hit another Jeep, with William Ceva, 54, of Montauk at the wheel.

An Amagansett ambulance took the first driver, who complained of knee pain, to the hospital; the other two were unhurt.
Deer figured in three other recent accident reports. One, on July 18 at 9 p.m., happened at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Atlantic Avenue in Amagansett; another was on Friday at 6:40 p.m. at the intersection of Old House Landing and High Point Road in Northwest.

The third was more serious. On Three Mile Harbor-Hog Creek Road in Springs, near Isle of Wight Road, six deer ran out in front of Tyler Conklin of Mastic at around 2:30 p.m. on July 20. He swerved to avoid the herd, police said, and hit a tree. The report said his 2018 Dodge van was towed, but did not mention injury to the driver.

E.M.T. Room Dedicated to Randy Hoffman

A plaque installed outside Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Medical Technician room last week officially dedicates the space to the late Randy Hoffman of East Hampton, a critical-care E.M.T. who worked with fire and ambulance departments across the South Fork and was credited with saving at least two lives during his long tenure as a first responder.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
