Statutory Rape Is Alleged

Thu, 05/20/2021 - 09:08

After receiving a complaint last Thursday night concerning a sexual relationship between a 26-year-old man and a minor under the age of 17, East Hampton Town police arrested Byron Torres of Daniel's Hole Road in Wainscott on charges of statutory rape. Contact between the two, police said, was from around Feb. 1 to April 30.

The alleged victim was a 15-year-old girl, who, according to the police report, gave detectives a sworn statement on Friday. The arrest was made at 9:30 that evening at Mr. Torres's house, where, said Det. Sgt. Daniel Toia, he admitted to the charge, felony rape in the third degree. He is also accused of acting in a manner to injure a child under 17, a misdemeanor.

As the case involves a minor, Sergeant Toia said there was not much other information police could release at this time. Mr. Torres was arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court by Justice Lisa R. Rana on Saturday morning; his cash bail of $10,000 was paid. He was to have made another virtual appearance in court today.
