A Courtroom Full of Drivers

Thu, 08/27/2020 - 09:32

East Hampton Town Justice Lisa R. Rana, who also presides over Sag Harbor Village Justice Court, will face a roomful of allegedly undocumented drivers there on Friday, Sept 4.

Sag Harbor police charged seven of them last week, starting on Aug. 18 with Mary Rivas, 43, of Sag Harbor, who was stopped when, as she drove through the intersection of Jermain Avenue and Palmer Terrace, police noted her black 2014 Porsche Cayenne had no front license plate. Her registration had been suspended, police said, and she was so charged.

Another Sag Harbor resident, Jaime Benenaula Guamban, 39, was  charged on Aug. 19. Police flagged down his white 2001 Dodge Ram outside 378 Main Street for a traffic infraction and found his registration had been suspended 11 days earlier for a lapse in insurance.

A third arrest for failure to produce current registration took place on Friday morning. Police stopped Wilson Condo's brown 2008 Toyota Camry at Jermain and Oakland Avenues and reported that the 25-year-old Sag Harbor resident's insurance coverage had ended last month.

Also on Friday morning, David Leonardi, 60, of Manorville was cited outside 165 Hampton Street. Police said the commercial vehicle insurance on his black 2015 Mercedes Sprinter Van had been cancelled the month before and its registration revoked.

Pedro Rivera-Lopez, 48, of East Hampton, driving a green 2010 Ford Escape, was charged that afternoon at 139 Hampton Street with aggravated unlicensed operation as well as lack of legal registration. Police said a computer check turned up two license suspensions, one last year and one this, for failure to appear in court.

On Saturday evening, Michael Delpiero, 61, of Chicago was pulled over at the Madison-Marsden Street intersection after police said they clocked his black 2020 BMW at 38 miles per hour in a 20-m.p.h. zone. He was charged with unlicensed operation as well as speeding.

Thomas Romano, 54, of Sag Harbor was also cited Saturday for driving his blue 2002 Ford Van with revoked registration due to an insurance lapse.

Back in East Hampton Village on Aug. 17, police stopped Aaron Chaus's white 2017 Lamborghini after spotting it speeding 50 m.p.h. in a 25-m.p.h. zone on Dunemere Road. Mr. Chaus, 37, who gave his address as Briar Patch Road, East Hampton, was charged with speeding and driving on a suspended license, and will answer the charges on Wednesday in East Hampton Town Justice Court.
