Amagansett

Three people were caught trespassing at about 5 p.m. on Jan. 5 at a property under construction off Main Street owned by Tina Piette. Kent Howie called police when he noticed people entering the property with flashlights. The trio told police they did not know anyone owned the building or that they were not allowed inside. An officer spoke to Ms. Piette, who did not wish to press charges.

East Hampton

Eden Lowlicht of East Hampton received a call from an unknown man who said she was the victim of Social Security fraud and that she needed to provide her Social Security number, address, and bank account information. She eventually hung up, realizing it was a scam.

East Hampton Village

On Jan. 13 at about 10:30 a.m., an officer on patrol found the grass parking lot next to Main Beach’s second lot damaged. It appeared that a car had been driven erratically on the grass. The Public Works Department was notified.

Police were called about an injured duck on West End Road Sunday evening. The duck was dead and police disposed of it.

Montauk

Someone drove into the handicapped-restricted access area in Eddie Ecker Park earlier this month and then drove in a circle, damaging the grass in two spots. Charles M. Morici, a Montauk resident who works part time for the East Hampton Town Parks Department, alerted police to the damage on Jan. 2. Mr. Morici said the damage would cost about $400 to repair.

Noyac

About $5,000 worth of tools were stolen Friday night or early Saturday from a work van parked in a driveway on Brick Kiln Road. Jose G. Carmonavidal, who discovered the tools gone from his van and a side window broken, is working on a complete list for Southampton Town detectives. Police are also investigating similar incidents of missing tools in Tuckahoe. Erving Lopez reported $3,500 in hand tools stolen from a trailer on a construction site on North Magee Street on Jan. 14. A generator that was chained up at the site was also taken; the padlock was cut off. Also on Saturday, $200 in hand tools were stolen from a work van parked at G. Craig Electric on Magee Street. Again, a window was broken to gain access.

Sag Harbor Village

A resident of Cormaria Retreat House on Bay Street was stuck in her room on Saturday evening, unable to open the door. Police were called. An officer was able to get her out.

Police were called to a fight at Page on Friday around 12:30 a.m. A man told police another man had touched his girlfriend inappropriately, and when he confronted the man he thought had touched her, someone else pushed him and a fight ensued. Despite a small bruise on his back, he declined medical treatment. No one wanted to pursue charges.

Julian Ramirez called police when he found an unwelcome person sleeping at a Main Street residence early Sunday morning. This is an ongoing issue that police are investigating.

On the Police Logs 03.21.24

A 37-year-old Montauk man attempted to make a fire in a barrel at the Montauk Skate Park to "grill some burgers while he and friends skated" on the afternoon of March 13. Someone called the police, who told the man it was against the rules. He apologized and put the fire out.

Policing East Hampton in 2023: A Look at the Statistics

In 2023, for 911 calls classified as "highest priority," the East Hampton Town Police Department's average response time was 5 minutes, 38 seconds. Officers made 163 drunken-driving arrests, assisted on 2,530 medical calls and nearly 1,800 fire-related emergencies, and logged 12 "use of force" incidents over the 12-month period. Those were just a few of the statistics presented by Chief Michael Sarlo to the East Hampton Town Board last week, capping off a year of protecting 70 square miles from Wainscott to Montauk.

Sexual Assault Investigation

A 29-year-old East Hampton woman went to police headquarters on March 4 to report being the victim of sexual assault, stemming from an incident on Feb. 23 at a house in town.

On the Police Logs 03.14.24

Police were called Friday afternoon to investigate a report that people were camping illegally in the Grace Estate Preserve. They came upon three men from Nassau County who’d put up a tent and built a campfire. Police told them to put out the fire, then issued a ticket for open burning and directed them to leave immediately.
