R. Scott Barter, 79

Ralph Scott Barter of East Hampton, a 15-year active member of the East Hampton Village Department of Emergency Medical Service and an Army veteran, died of lung cancer on April 4. He was 79.

Mr. Barter was a past member of the Lions Club and the Kiwanis Club, served as a Little League coach, and was a member of East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue and a CPR instructor.

He served in the Army from 1969 through 1973, and was honorably discharged at the rank of staff sergeant. While he grew up here and continued to reside in East Hampton over the years, he also worked in New York City and abroad, his family said.

He was born on Sept. 29, 1946, in Mineola to Ralph Barter and the former Muriel Howe. He graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor of Arts degree before attending graduate school at New York University.

Mr. Barter was cremated. He is survived by a son, Charlie Barter of East Hampton, and a daughter, Kelly Barter-Piper of Florida.

He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church here, and a graveside service will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery on Cedar Street. 

Mr. Barter had asked that memorial contributions be made to the East Hampton Village Department of Emergency Medical Service, 1 Cedar Street, East Hampton 11937.
