Sarah Andrews Hill-Wood

Thu, 10/30/2025 - 07:11

Paid Notice: Sarah Andrews Hill-Wood (“Sally”) of East Hampton died on Friday, October 10, at the age of 83. She was the widow of the late Peter Denis Hill-Wood of London, England.

Born in New York City on May 31, 1942, to Albert O’Beirne Andrews and Frances Hall Andrews, Sally was educated at Rye Country Day School in New York and Miss Hall’s School in Massachusetts before graduating from the University of Michigan in 1964. After marrying Peter in 1971 she moved to England where she lived for the next fifty years. Her marriage was a happy one, in part because Peter agreed early on that summers in East Hampton were better, drier and longer than those spent in London. In the early 1970’s there were not many Americans living in London, so Sally was something of a novelty in her adopted country. She may never have quite got to grips with

the particular damp cold in which England specializes, or long afternoons watching cricket, but her keen sense of humour and insatiable curiosity for people endeared her to so many, and she formed deep friendships on both sides of the Atlantic. Sally became a strong Anglophile and supporter of Arsenal Football Club, but her heart remained American. This influence was clearly felt by her three children, who as adults all moved to the United States despite having grown up with very English roots. Shortly after Peter died in 2018, she moved to her home in East Hampton to be closer to them.

Sally loved and was greatly knowledgeable about art, and was blessed with a natural eye for style. She adored her working cocker spaniels, Polly and Maggie, each named after beloved golfing friends. Both tested her concentration on the putting green, loudly panting in her backswing and running across her line. In her final years she showed resilience and an appetite for fresh endeavours despite an increasingly fragile physical condition, never losing her desire to live life to the fullest.

She was pre-deceased by her beloved brother Albert Andrews, Jr. and is survived by a daughter, Sarah F. Dana, two sons, Julian P. Hill-Wood and Charles D. Hill-Wood, and five grandchildren.
