Lynn Klein, a veteran of the Coast Guard who was a police officer in East Hampton Village for 20 years, died of cancer on June 14 at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. The East Hampton resident was 72 and had been ill for one month.

Joyce Bennett Klein, a longtime resident of East Hampton, said her husband was an "old-school, hard-working man" who loved spending time with his family and was very proud of his military service and law enforcement career.

Mr. Klein was born in Hammond, Ind., on July 20, 1948, to Edward Klein and the former Bonnie Watts. He joined the Coast Guard in 1967 and was stationed in New London, Conn. He was honorably discharged in 1971, and was married that same year.

From 1981 to 2001, he was a village police officer. For much of that time and afterward, from 1985 to 2010, he also worked for Schenck Fuels, often working both jobs, one right after the other, in a single day.

His wife said he had a special place for animals in his heart, particularly dogs.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Klein leaves a daughter, Kristi Klein of Springs, and a son, Grant Klein of Akron, Ohio. Three sisters and two brothers survive as well.

The family has suggested memorial donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, the American Legion, or to a veterans group of one's choice.
