Mary Ann Caldarone, 98

Fri, 08/21/2020 - 11:42

Mary Ann Caldarone, a frequent visitor to Amagansett, where her son, James Caldarone Jr., has a house, died on Aug. 10 at home in Schenectady, N.Y. She was 98 years old and had been in declining health for two years.

Mrs. Caldarone was born in Stamford, Conn., on Nov. 22, 1921, to John and Antoinette Tamburri. She graduated from Stamford High School in 1939.

In 1942 she married James Caldarone Sr. They had four children. After they were grown and gone, she took a job in the infant-wear department of a Lord & Taylor store in Stamford, working from 1969 to 1991.

A parishioner of the Church of St. Cecilia in Stamford, Mrs. Caldarone was "loved and cherished by her nine grandchildren and adored by her 19 great-grandchildren," her family wrote. She loved dancing, traveling, and playing golf, and for a time had a winter home at the Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla.

Her husband died in 2016. Three siblings, Lena Rutigliano, August Tamburri, and Dominick Tamburri, and a grandson, Richard Deenihan Jr., also died before her.

In addition to her son, who lives in Darien, Conn., Mrs. Caldarone leaves three daughters. They are Barbara Hamilton of Schenectady, Louise Deenihan of West Suffield, Conn., and Gail Miller of Charleston, S.C. A sister, Ann Saphier of Peru, Me., also survives, as do many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The Rev. Alfonso Picone officiated at services at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stamford on Saturday. Burial followed at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, Conn. The family has suggested memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association, online at alz.org/donate, the Connecticut Brain Tumor Alliance, ctbta.org, or a charity of one's choice.

The Ladies Village Improvement Society’s annual fair happens on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and this year’s “is bigger than ever,” the society says. Not only will the carousel be back, but the Playland area for kids will be expanded. There will be face painting, a roving magician, a bubble artist, and pony rides for the little ones.

Montauk Chemists Opens, Minus Pharmacy

Frank Calvo, the longtime pharmacist at White’s Drug and Department Store, which closed on Oct. 31, has opened Montauk Chemists on Main Street and is selling over-the-counter merchandise including vitamins and self-care products. One week after an inspection of the store’s pharmacy, however, he is still awaiting New York State approval to operate it.

Slow Start at New Gosman’s

In some ways, Gosman’s Dock, one of Montauk’s few remaining family-owned and operated businesses until its October 2024 sale, closely resembles the complex of restaurants and shops long revered by locals and visitors alike. In other ways, though, it is markedly different under its new ownership.
