Virgil Suciu, after escaping the Communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu, immigrated to the United States in 1974 and went on to sponsor several Romanian families that eventually helped establish a small community of Romanians on the East End. He died of cardiac arrest on March 13 at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. 

Jacqueline (Jaki) Riddick Jackson, a fixture in East Hampton for more than 60 years, “built a recognized place in the community as a teacher, mentor, and friend to countless people,” her daughter, Danielle Parris Canfield, wrote. A yoga teacher here for many years, she was prompted to retire from teaching at the age of 92 by a surprise diagnosis of colon cancer last June. Her daughter said that she “died with dignity” on Oct. 22, with “her small family and friends” at her bedside. 

In 2023, for 911 calls classified as "highest priority," the East Hampton Town Police Department's average response time was 5 minutes, 38 seconds. Officers made 163 drunken-driving arrests, assisted on 2,530 medical calls and nearly 1,800 fire-related emergencies, and logged 12 "use of force" incidents over the 12-month period. Those were just a few of the statistics presented by Chief Michael Sarlo to the East Hampton Town Board last week, capping off a year of protecting 70 square miles from Wainscott to Montauk.

A petition signed by dozens of Pierson Middle and High School students and parents, and submitted to the Sag Harbor School Board on Monday night, has Sag Harbor administrators potentially embarking on a total review of the courses and programs offered at the school. "Today, we question if our current academic program is providing the best learning opportunity for our children and ask for a reassessment," the petition reads in part.
