The striped bass showed up en masse for their annual residency off Montauk on May 1. It was a true sign that spring had sprung for those who wet a line for the highly prized linesiders.

Erik Engstrom, the 25-year-old former county cross-country champion, topped Dylan Cashin and Ryleigh O’Donnell’s May Day 5K Sunday, crossing the East Hampton Main Beach finish line in 16 minutes and 22.76 seconds, besting a field of 787 finishers.

Of three squads fighting for playoff spots last week, one, East Hampton’s softball team, was eliminated, while the other two, Bonac’s baseball team and the Southampton-based South Fork Islanders boys lacrosse team, remained in contention.

The Hamptons Adult Hardball League began its 2024 season and ended its 2023 season at Sag Harbor’s Mashashimuet Park Sunday. Games continue at the park Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon.
