Prevent Kitchen Fires

    East Hampton

    September 24, 2013

Dear Mr. Rattray:

The Town of East Hampton fire marshal’s office would like to remind everyone that Oct. 6 through Oct. 12 is National Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is Prevent Kitchen Fires.

Many families gather in the kitchen to spend time together, but it can be one of the most hazardous rooms in the house if you don’t practice safe cooking behaviors.

 Good Will and Kindness

    Springs

    September 16, 2013

Dear David:

The other day I lost my wallet — a wallet that had belonged to my late mother — and everything in it.

At the Buckskill Tennis Club, I had put it on the trunk of my husband’s car as we talked following an arduous workout, and were changing cars.

When I remembered I’d put it there, he had pulled out of the driveway, on his way to do some errands in the village after stopping at The Star.

Later, having retraced his route from Buckskill to

Army of Caregivers

    California

    August 27, 2013

Dear David:

I am writing to express my gratitude to the East End community for the care and kind concern that was shown to my dad toward the end of his life. The last few years were challenging due to various factors — my being his only child and living in California was one, and his declining health and occasional confusion were others.

Two Caring Souls

    East Hampton

    August 29, 2013

Dear David,

As my Jeep’s rear left tire shredded and fumed to the tune of the Montauk-bound L.I.R.R. cars noisily parallel to Montauk Highway along the Napeague strip — or were they? — my scarlet vehicle, and speaking engagement, came to an abrupt halt.

Among the endless stream of careening cars heading east last Wednesday, first to stop to help was:

    1. The greatest Good Samaritan of them all, Bulgarian Vinny the personal trainer!

Wall of Vehicles

    Springs

    August 26, 2013

David,

There are some people who are portraying the argument over beach parking on the Maidstone loop as a conflict between locals and folks from away. It might be — but not as perceived.

Imagine you grew up in Maidstone Park and went to this beach all your life.

Lee Davis, Director

    East Hampton

    August 19, 2013

To the Editor,

Lee Davis, whose obituary appeared in last week’s Star, was an important part of our community, as he was the director of choice at LTV for nearly all the  independent producers at LTV, including myself.

After retiring from a distinguished career in television and advertising, as noted in his obituary, Lee became an active and major director at LTV, our town’s public access television station.

'You Are My Hero’

    East Hampton

    August 12, 2013

To the Editor,

I would like to share my experience yesterday.

I was helping at a brunch here in East Hampton and one of the guests was Gabby Gifford. Just to see her I was full of emotion. I helped her up two steps and said to her softly, “You are my hero.” She held on to my hand very tightly. I gave her a glass of O.J.

Later, about two hours passed and everyone started to leave.

Emergency Preparedness

    East Hampton

    August 4, 2013

Dear David,

One of the lessons learned during Superstorm Sandy was how difficult it is to stay informed once the storm has hit. Many of us lost power for days, even weeks, and had no idea of where to go to charge our phones, replenish water containers, or find bathrooms. Not everyone was aware of the Red Cross shelter at the high school, and so it was underutilized.

Support Our Fishermen

    Montauk

    July 25, 2013

To the Editor:

Yesterday in Montauk, while many vacationers were enjoying our beaches, restaurants, and clubs, locals were holding their breath. One of our own fishermen was missing at sea. I was doing my morning swim when eight Coast Guard helicopters flew overhead. I got a very bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Memories of Jim

    East Hampton

    July 22, 2013

To the Editor:

We want to thank Abby Jane Brody for her beautifully articulated memories of our friend Jim Jeffrey. Her words captured our memories and thoughts which we will continue to have about Jim.

On our most recent visit with Jim a few weeks ago, we did the grand tour of the garden, enjoying his incredible knowledge of horticulture, the specifics of his collection, and all the wonderful stories that went along. And of course, we did not leave empty-handed.

Sense of Community

    Springs

    July 12, 2013

Dear David,

For almost 40 years we lived peacefully in Springs until July 7, when we returned from the beach to find our house on fire. It was a terrifying experience. The house was pretty much destroyed, but, thankfully, nobody was hurt.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the firefighters from the Amagansett, East Hampton, and Springs fire departments — our neighbors and friends.

Soldier Ride

    New York City

    July 6, 2013

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your inspirational, informative, but incomplete article on the 10th anniversary of Soldier Ride the Hamptons.

Certainly one of the reasons Soldier Ride is a sacred day for those of us who are fortunate enough to live on the East End, is that it is named for a true Sag Harbor hero, Navy Cross recipient Lance Cpl. Jordan Haerter.
