Trustees Launch Effort to Legalize Work Done Without Permits

In their ongoing inventory of docks throughout their jurisdiction, the East Hampton Town Trustees have discovered a number of waterfront structures, such as docks and staircases, that lack permits. In an effort to ensure that those comply with local regulations, the trustees voted on Dec. 12 to establish a new, voluntary process — the “application to legalize” — to remedy the issue.

LaLota on Two Committees

Freshman Representative Nick LaLota of the First Congressional District said he was “happily notified” on Monday that Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had named him to two plum committees — Armed Services and Homeland Security.

A February Hearing on Wainscott Commercial Center

The East Hampton Town Planning Board has set Feb. 8 as the date for a public hearing on the draft environmental impact statement for the Wainscott Commercial Center subdivision. The hearing will be held in two parts at LTV Studios in Wainscott due to the considerable interest in the proposal for the former sand mine.

Sag Harbor Village Board Wants to Extend Paid Parking Season

The Sag Harbor Village Board announced on Jan. 10 its intention to extend the village’s paid parking program for 2023. The board would like to extend the season by approximately six weeks, so it would run from May 1 until Nov. 30. In 2022, Long Wharf was converted to paid parking from May 17 until Oct. 10. The board voted to hold a public hearing on the matter at the next meeting, on Feb. 14.

Lake Montauk Inlet: Bulkhead Beach First?

It’s a cold and still January afternoon as the commercial fishing vessel Kimberly makes its way through the inlet at Lake Montauk, which is scheduled to be dredged in October, from 12 to 17 feet, by the Army Corps of Engineers. That’s great news for captains and crew alike, but there’s a catch. The dredging, according to the Montauk attorney Andy Hammer, could make a bad situation worse at the bustling commercial-fishing boat basin attached to Inlet Seafood.

An East Hampton man is facing two drunken-driving charges stemming from a crash he allegedly caused late on Saturday afternoon. No one was injured in the incident.

On Saturday afternoon at the Ladies Village Improvement Society, a man sorting through donated clothes found a plastic bag containing “a white powdery substance” and called police. An officer took possession of the bag for storage in the evidence locker until it can be destroyed.

George D. Meredith, Influential Ad Man

George D. Meredith, a co-founder and creative director of Gianettino & Meredith, a New Jersey advertising agency, died at home in Springs on Jan. 5. He was 82 and had been in declining health.

Nancy J. Mulford

Nancy Johnston Mulford of Buell Lane in East Hampton, a volunteer and Presbyterian elder in the many places she lived, died on Jan. 12 in Skillman, N.J. She was 85.

Louis J. Sapienza

Louis J. Sapienza, the owner of East Hampton Masonry Supply, died on Jan. 8 at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. He was 70 and had lived with heart disease for several years.

James Gerard Stier

James Gerard Stier of Montauk, who had a long career with W.R. Grace & Company, a multinational with roots in materials, chemicals, and shipping, died at his son’s house in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Jan. 3. He was 94 and had been in hospice care for about two months.

Dr. Berry James Vaughan

Dr. Berry James Vaughan, a dentist with a private practice in East Hampton from 1974 until 2018, died on Jan. 7 at the Westhampton Care Center. He was 75 and had been ill with cancer and other health complications.

Frederick A. Terry Jr.

Frederick A. Terry Jr., an attorney and sportsman, philanthropist and scholar, died at home in East Hampton on Jan. 13. He was 90.

Kathryn D. Vegessi

Kathryn D. Vegessi, shoreside support for the Lazybones, a popular half-day party boat hailing out of Montauk operated by her husband, Capt. Michael Vegessi, died at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn on Jan. 8. She was 70.
