Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. announced in February that he would not be seeking re-election in November after nearly 30 years in state government. For those wondering what his next act would be, the suspense is over: Mr. Thiele has been named executive director of the Friends of the Georgica Pond Foundation.

There were no surprises in the East Hampton Village election on Tuesday. Mayor Jerry Larsen, Chris Minardi, the deputy mayor, and Sandra Melendez, another village trustee, all ran unopposed and were re-elected to four-year terms.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the American flamingo that first appeared at Georgica Pond on May 31 continued to draw bird lovers to East Hampton. In just the last week, over 100 birders trekked down the beach to view the bird and submit lists to eBird.

Ryan Fowkes, who is racing royalty when it comes to the East End running community, capped his 2024 competitive season with a third-place overall finish in the Shelter Island 10K on Saturday. The top women's division finisher was Angie Rafter of Vernon, Conn., whose photo finish was called "really exciting" by the race director.

Hours before the start of the Shelter Island 10K on Saturday, the Beacon of Hope 5K run/walk in Montauk kicked off as another successful fund-raiser for the Coalition for Women’s Cancers, drawing runners from all over Long Island, New York, and New Jersey to a race boasting some of the best views around.

Part of a new series from the Wainscott Heritage Project, on Saturday at the Wainscott Chapel, Geoff Gehman, a journalist and author, will go "Beyond the Kingdom: Wainscott 1.0 and 2.5." Starting at 10 a.m., he will dive into the past by way of his memories of life here in the 1960s and 1970s, from Norman Jaffe architecture to the Georgica Association to Truman Capote.

The end-times landscaping job wrought by the southern pine beetle along Montauk Highway in Amagansett could seem pretty compared to how it would look after a fire. “It’s a giant tinderbox out there,” said Chris Beckert, who is in his fourth year as chief of the Amagansett Fire Department.

In a rare case of the Town of East Hampton removing an illegally built accessory structure, it took out a wooden walkway that connected a house on South Emerson Avenue in Montauk to the beach. According to the director of code enforcement, it was built without a permit and crossed over an easement seeded with beach grass meant to help prevent erosion.

A public hearing last week on Adam Potter’s planned development of a 64,429-square-foot, mixed-use building on Bridge Street in Sag Harbor Village brought out many critics.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works has three main objectives for the turnpike: improving pedestrian safety, repairing the pavement of the road itself, including asphalt resurfacing, and repairing and adding new drainage systems to improve the flooding conditions.

Ditch Plain Beach will be more beach and less ditch this summer after a beach replenishment project that will bring approximately 200 truckloads of sand, about 1,000 cubic yards daily, began on Monday.
