Ocean Lifeguard Certification Course Coming Up

East Hampton Town is offering an ocean lifeguard certification course on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett. The course, for those who plan to work as ocean guards, starts this Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and will conclude on Aug. 12. To take part, trainees must be at least 16 years old.

The cost for those getting certification for the first time is $165; recertification costs $65. Registration is at through the town Recreation Department.

Tom Piacentine was walking to the beach in Amagansett 40 years ago when he stumbled upon what looked like a ball buried in the sand. Though he didn’t yet know it, what he had found was a seemingly authentic World War II-era German steel helmet.
