The East Hampton Star won awards for its East magazine and coverage of education in the New York Press Association’s 2021 Better Newspaper Contest, and its deputy managing editor, Christine Sampson, took third place in the writer of the year category.

The judges praised Ms. Sampson’s “ability to handle a variety of topics with comprehension and style,” and said her “work showed solid writing on a variety of assignments.” Annette Hinkle of The Sag Harbor Express took first in that category.

The awards were presented at the association’s spring conference in Saratoga Springs over the weekend. A selection of education articles by Ms. Sampson won third place in its division for coverage of education, and East magazine’s 2021 holiday issue, published in November, took second place in best magazine category, with The Sag Harbor Express’s Express magazine winning first.

Among other awards for the Express were the Stuart C. Dorman Award for Editorial Excellence and first place in its division for general excellence, while the Express News Group’s East Hampton Press and eastern and western editions of The Southampton Press were recognized for editorial, photography, design, and advertising excellence.
