Three Hikes in Montauk This Week

Thu, 12/26/2019 - 11:34

The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society will host three hikes this week in Montauk. On Saturday at 10 a.m. Paul and Lynn Devany will lead a 2.5-mile hike to Amsterdam Beach. The meeting place is the trailhead across from Deep Hollow Ranch, about three miles east of the downtown. The Devanys can be reached at 516-225-4757.

On Tuesday at 10 a.m. Eva Moore will lead a three-mile hike to the seal haul-out site. Warm clothing, sturdy footwear, and binoculars are recommended. Hikers will meet on Camp Hero Road, a right turn off Route 27 about a mile past Deep Hollow Ranch. Ms. Moore can be reached at 631-238-5134 or 631-681-4774 for more information.

To help people start the year off right, the society will lead another one on New Year’s Day, a brisk nine-mile hike through Hither Woods out to the Block Island Sound coastline. The meeting place is at the Montauk Recycling Center at 11 a.m. for this moderate-pace hike with some hills. Snacks, liquids, and appropriate clothing have been suggested. Rick Whalen, who will lead, can be called at 631-275-8539 for more details.

There will also be two hikes to the seal haul-out site from the Montauk Point Lighthouse State Park office, in the lower parking lot on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. A fee of $4 per person is requested for the three-mile excursion. Reservations are required at 631-668-5000.

A Newsletter on Being a Jew in Today’s America

One of the essential roles of religion, Rabbi Jan Uhrbach of the Bridge Shul in Bridgehampton said this week, is to “help us hold onto our humanity, and remind us of the higher values that go beyond money and power and position and all of those things, in a time when the values that I hold dear are not only being violated, they’re being rejected as values.”

Item of the Week: The Hemerocallis Garden, 1962

Hemerocallis may be an unfamiliar term, but the garden adjacent to Clinton Academy once bore the name. This photo shows the gate to the garden some two decades after its establishment in 1941.
