Zeldin Declares Victory Tuesday Night

Wed, 11/04/2020 - 07:53
Nancy Goroff and Lee Zeldin faced each other in the congressional race on the South Fork.

With early voting and Election Day votes counted, the Republican incumbent Lee Zeldin appears to be the winner of the race to represent the First Congressional District, having garnered 61.31 percent of those votes to Nancy Goroff's 38.66 percent, according to unofficial totals from the Suffolk County Board of Elections.

Even with a record number of voters requesting absentee ballots this year, his election night lead seems insurmountable. Mr. Zeldin declared victory shortly before midnight, but as of Wednesday morning, Ms. Goroff had not conceded.

"I am deeply honored and humbled that the families of Long Island have entrusted me to continue representing our great congressional district," Mr. Zeldin said in an announcement at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday.

This year, the Suffolk County Board of Elections sent out 191,220 absentee ballots. It has not yet begun to count absentee ballots.

Suffolk County voters also came out strong for President Trump in early voting and on Election Day, giving him 55.6 percent of the vote to Joseph Biden's 43 percent. There are just over 1.02 million registered voters in Suffolk County. President Trump also came out ahead of his opponent in the 2016 race here.
