The Springs School Diversity Club went on a field trip to the Springs Presbyterian Church’s food pantry to assemble food bags for families in need.

Students worked at different stations. Some helped unbox nonperishable foods. Others put food in paper bags while still others checked expiration dates to make sure families receive food that hasn’t expired.

Springs School students filled 330 bags with items including oatmeal, rice, boxed cereal, ramen, flour, jelly and jams, beans, canned fruit, lentils, and tuna.

“I think it went insanely well,” said Isabelle Etzel, a student. “We organized so much food for the people in need, and I loved it because I felt like I was doing the right thing.” There was a photographer taking pictures for the food pantry’s website and some kids were interviewed by him. “Why are you in the Diversity Club?” the photographer asked the sixth grader Colin Stone. Colin explained that he wants to help people in need, especially at this time of year. They finished their day at the church by taking a photo and walking back to the school. By Karyme Vega and Novella Dunham, Grade 6
