Lambrecht and Kendrick

Solo shows of work by Mel Kendrick and Laurie Lambrecht are opening on Saturday at the Drawing Room in East Hampton and will remain on view through July 27.

Lambrecht's "Texere" is timed to coincide with the publication of her new monograph of the same name. The Latin word, meaning "to weave or intertwine," is the etymological root of texture, textile, or text, three elements at the core of the artist's practice.

The show features the varied mediums and techniques she has developed in response to the textures and hues she observes in nature and includes mixed-media works, created from photographs and fabrics.

Kendrick's show, "At the Core," features a selection of wood sculptures and a single work on paper created in collaboration with the Dieu Donne studio at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Matthew Satz in Springs

"(There's Gonna Be A) Showdown," a one-man show of work by Matthew Satz, opens Thursday at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center in Springs and will continue through July 26.

Based in East Hampton, Satz's mixed-media works investigate the history of painting while pointing the way to its future possibilities. The exhibition includes works from throughout the artist's career as well as several new, site-responsive pieces.

Since earning a B.A. from Brandeis University in 1993, Satz has continued to challenge the history of painting with such notable series as "Smoke Paintings," "Strip-Edge Paintings," and "Tar and Feather Paintings."

Large-Scale Abstraction

"Atmosphere 10," a show of large-scale abstract paintings organized by Setha Low, is opening at Ashawagh Hall in Springs Friday with a 5 to 8 p.m. reception. It will run through Sunday, when a closing reception is set from 3 to 5.

Participating artists are Burt Van Deusen, Chris Lucore, Donna Corvi, Elizabeth Karsch, Janet Jennings, John Haubrich, Nadia Block, Robin du Plessis, Roisin Bateman, and Low.

Gallery hours are Friday, 11 to 8, and Saturday and Sunday, 11 to 5. An artists' talk will take place on Saturday from 3 to 4.

Floral Celebration

"Say It With Flowers," an invitational show featuring works by 30 or more local artists, opens Thursday at the Depot Gallery in Montauk and will run through June 29. A reception will be held Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

The exhibition includes a variety of styles, sizes, and mediums, from the representational to the abstract, from painting to photography to glass. Among the participating artists are Andrea Sher, Carl Scorza, Donna Corvi, Setha Low, Teresa Lawler, Phyllis Chillingworth, Gerry Giliberti, Robin Gianis, Mary Daunt, and Marcie Honerkamp.

On William Merritt Chase

Neill Slaughter, an artist, art historian, and university professor of fine arts and art history for some 40 years, will be at the Southampton Arts Center next Thursday at 6 p.m. to present a free illustrated lecture on the life, career, and influence of William Merritt Chase.

Chase was not only a renowned artist, but also the foremost art teacher in America during the Gilded Age, whose many students include Irving Ramsey Wiles, Howard Chandler Christy, George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper, and Georgia O’Keeffe.

In 1993, after teaching at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia, as well as in England, California, and New York City, Slaughter joined the faculty of Southampton College. On his retirement in 2017 he was awarded professor emeritus status.

"Team Spirit" at Stella Flame

Bridgehampton's Stella Flame Gallery will open "Team Spirit," a group exhibition of work by a dozen artists, with a reception on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. The show brings together diverse practices that intersect through color, gesture, storytelling, materiality, and cultural perspective, says the gallery.

Exhibiting artists are Lucy Cookson, Emanuel De Sousa, Cecilia Paredes, Sandy Cohen, Miles Jaffe, Jojo Anavim, Craig Anthony Miller, Edward Wilkerson, Bob Gruen, Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen, Spencer Stown, and Adam Mugavero.

This article has been changed from its original and print versions to reflect that the subject of Neill Slaughter's talk will be William Merritt Chase, not John Singer Sargent, as originally announced by the Southampton Arts Center.
