Live From the Met
The Met: Live in HD will kick off the 2026 season at Guild Hall with a new production of Vincenzo Bellini’s 1835 opera “I Puritani (The Puritans)” on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The opera is set around 1650 during the English Civil War between Puritans and Royalists. The political conflict is a backdrop to the central love story, which focuses on Elvira, the daughter of a Cromwell supporter, and Lord Arturo Talbot, a Royalist fighting for the Stuarts.
Staged by Charles Edwards and conducted by Marco Armiliato, the production stars Lisette Oropesa, a soprano, as Elvira, and Lawrence Brownlee, a tenor, as Arturo, who are brought together by love and torn apart by the war. It also stars Artur Rucinski, a baritone, as Riccardo, who has been engaged to Elvira against her will, and Christian Van Horn, a baritone, as Elvira’s sympathetic uncle, Giorgio.
Tickets are $30, $27 for members.
Poetry and Music
“Winter Intermezzo: An Afternoon of Poetry and Music,” a celebration of the life of the late poet and writer Peter Walsh, will happen at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Bridgehampton on Sunday afternoon at 2.
Uplifting poetry will be read by John Avlon, the Rev. Jim Erwin, Meg Gibson, Paul Hecht, Hugh King, John Landes, Philippa Weismann, Jill Burdge, Lisa Michne, and Mari Munoz.
Musical interludes will be performed by Garry Ianco, a violinist and assistant concertmaster of the New American Sinfonietta, Siyu Guo, a pianist, and Iris Ornig, a bassist and founder and director of East End Jazz.
Reservations can be made on the library’s website. The event is free, but any donations will support the library’s community programs.
Sticks and Stones
Sticks and Stones Comedy Club will return to the Southampton Arts Center on Saturday evening at 8 with a stand-up program headlined by Tony Deyo, whom the Village Voice called “one of the tightest joke writers in the business.”
Mr. Deyo made his late-night television debut on “Conan” in 2013, and subsequently appeared on “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson”; AXS TV’s “Gotham Comedy Live,” and “Comics Unleashed” with Byron Allen. His album “Comedy Road Trip” debuted as the top-selling stand-up album on iTunes.
Tickets are $35, $50 for reserved seats, and $70 for top tier seating. Doors open at 7:30 for snacks, drinks, and live music.
Garden Programs
The next round-table discussion of the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons, set for Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Bridgehampton Community House, will be devoted to creating a deer resistant garden. The program will focus on plants that have proven effective in the East End gardens of several alliance members. A list will be shared during the discussion.
Some topics to be covered are scented plants; plants with fuzzy texture; why new plantings have to be protected during the first month; and suggestions to avoid damage from voles, moles, rabbits, squirrels, and other animals.
“The Unsung Season: Gardens in Winter” will be the subject of the alliance’s next lecture, which will happen via Zoom on Sunday afternoon at 2. Karen Bussolini, a noted garden photographer, writer, and organic gardener, will talk about the transition from fall to spring and the many possibilities for garden interest well past the first frost.
Members will receive a link via email. Nonmember tickets can be bought for $10 at hahgarden.org/tickets.
