Mon, 04/03/2023 - 15:54
Roisin Bateman's untitled beeswax and pigment work is included in a works on paper show at Ashawagh Hall in Springs.

Papering the Hall
"Works on Paper," a show of work by 22 artists organized by Coco Meyers and Laurie Dolphin, will be at Ashawagh Hall in Springs from Friday through Monday. A reception will be held Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and a talk with eight participating artists will take place on Saturday from 3 to 4:30.

The exhibition will include unique works on paper by Elise Ansel, Rosin Bateman, Maud Bryt, Carolyn Conrad, Ms. Dolphin, Denise Gale, Nicholas Howey, Janet Jennings, Jennifer Marshall, Jane Martin, Christine Matthai, Andrew Mockler, Jill Moser, Jeff Muhs, Anne Raymond, Bastienne Schmidt, Janice Stanton, Kevin Teare, Barbara Thomas, Dan Welden, Amy Wickersham, and Almond Zigmund.

Gallery hours are 11 to 5:30.

Open Studio in Sag
The next Late Night Open Studio at The Church in Sag Harbor will take place on Friday, April 14, from 6:30 to 9. Artists of all mediums can join, socialize, and work on any projects, past or present.

The Church is offering only the studio space; participants are responsible for providing their own supplies, including easels, and for cleaning up their work areas. The studio is free, and all ages will be welcomed.

Because there is limited capacity, the program will operate on a first-come-first-served basis, and only those who register or buy a ticket through the venue's website will be guaranteed a spot in the studio. The cost is $10, free for members.

Paul Davis Surprises
"Inklings," an exhibition of works by the graphic artist and illustrator Paul Davis, will open at Keyes Art in Sag Harbor with a reception on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. "Most of these works have been private," the artist said, "done to refresh and create surprise for myself."

Mr. Davis, who lives in Sag Harbor, has exhibited his paintings and posters for advertising, publishing, and entertainment at museums and galleries throughout the world. His work has appeared in Life, Time, Playboy, Sports Illustrated, Harper's Bazaar, Esquire, The New York Times, The New Yorker, among many other publications.

In 1987, the Drama Desk created a special award to recognize Mr. Davis's iconic posters for Joseph Papp's Public Theater, and he is in the Hall of Fame of both the Art Directors Club and the Society of Illustrators.

The show will continue through May 4.

Celebrating Nature
The Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor will open "Inside Out," a show of paintings by Amy Florence and Nelson H. White, with a reception on Saturday from 6 to 7 p.m. It will remain on view through May 7.

Both artists know their subjects "inside out," the gallery said, and commit their observations of nature to canvas. Ms. Florence's paintings bring the natural world into her studio not only in the form of freshly cut flowers but also by setting them against windows that let the outside in.

Mr. White's deep observation of nature has taken a poetic turn, as exemplified by "Sunset, Sea, and Sky 02.21.2021," which has echoes of the abstract paintings of Mark Rothko.

Bluedorn's Perspective
Viewpoints, the Watermill Center's conversation series, will feature Scott Bluedorn, an artist, illustrator, and designer, next Thursday at 6 p.m.

Working in various mediums, including painting, drawing, collage, prints, and found-object assemblage, Mr. Bluedorn, who lives and works in East Hampton, is inspired by cultural anthropology, primitivism, and nautical traditions, distilling imagery that speaks to the collective unconscious through myth and visual storytelling.

Free reservations can be made on the center's website.

Warhol, Basquiat, Halsband
In 1985, Michael Halsband took 175 photographs of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol to promote a show of collaborative paintings by the artists at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery.

While the photographer has held back most of the images for more than 30 years, they are now on view in "Basquiat x Warhol. Painting Four Hands" at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris through Aug. 28. That exhibition includes not only the collaborative paintings but also work by other artists with whom they joined forces, including Mr. Halsband.

"These images have come to represent so much, not just of Jean and Andy but of a moment in their career and my own," the photographer said.
