Artists, books, and artists' books will be featured all weekend at The Church in Sag Harbor, starting Saturday at noon with a book signing and sale of works by John Alexander, Steve Miller, Bastienne Schmidt, Jeremy Dennis, Candace Hill, Louis Meisel, Susan Meisel, Lindsay Morris, and others. In addition, already-signed copies of books by many other artists will be available for sale.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Jerry Saltz will be at The Church on Saturday afternoon at 2 to discuss and sign copies of his latest book, "Art is Life: Icons and Iconoclasts, Visionaries and Vigilantes, and Flashes of Hope in the Night." Mr. Saltz, the senior art critic at New York magazine, is the author of the New York Times best seller "How to Be an Artist." Tickets are $25.

"Books as Art: Stab Stitch Bindings," a workshop led by the artist Samuel Havens, will explore the possibilities of that unique binding method on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Often characterized by its geometric patterns and exposed spine, this traditional style of binding dates from East Asia in the 1600s. From paper, book board, and thread, each participant will create a stab-bound book while learning fundamental bookbinding skills. The $75 fee includes all materials.

The weekend will conclude on Sunday at 3 with a reading by The Church's artist-in-residence Drew Zeiba. Mr. Zeiba's fiction, criticism, and cultural journalism has appeared in Fence, New York magazine, PIN-UP, Document Journal, and other publications, and in Steve Schapiro's "Andy Warhol and Friends." Tickets are $5, free for members.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
