We Can Dance If We Want To

Margaret Garrett, an interdisciplinary artist now in residence at The Church in Sag Harbor, will create four choreographed ritual dances, and artworks related to them. Because the project does not require trained dancers, Ms. Garrett has issued a call for volunteers interested in performing.

The second of two weekends of pereformances—the first happened Feb. 11 and 12—will take place Feb, 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Feb. 26 from 1 to 4. Ms. Garrett, who lives and maintains a studio on Shelter Island, will welcome participants 16 and older, who will be taught simple dances inspired by the four elements: earth, fire, air, and water.

Each session will begin with an introduction and a brief warmup. Dancers will then learn the movements and choreography of the piece and rehearse it. By the end of each session, the group will be able to perform the full dance with music.

Ms. Garrett's artistic practice includes painting, printmaking, collage, and video. She grew up training to be a dancer and performed with the Pennsylvania and Cleveland Ballet companies. She discovered painting in her 20s, but returned to dancing in 2017, filming herself dancing and using video clips to create video collages. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States.

The performances will be filmed, and Ms. Garrett will film individuals doing parts of the dance for a video collage project. There will be one break with refreshments during each session. Dancers have been asked to wear a single color, but not white.

Individuals can sign up for any or all of the sessions. Participation is free, but volunteers have been asked to R.S.V.P. on The Church's website, where more information is available.

This article has been changed from its original and print versions to reflect the change of dates for the second pair of workshops.
