The Art Scene 06.09.22

Mon, 06/06/2022 - 14:50
Gerry Giliberti's "Storm Clouds, Gardiners Bay" will be on view at Ashawagh Hall in Springs.

New at Halsey McKay
Solo exhibitions of work by Chris Duncan and Denise Kupferschmidt, and a window installation of stained glass by Frank Haines, are on view through July 4 at the Halsey McKay Gallery in East Hampton.

"Strawberry" features 12 new works in Mr. Duncan's signature medium, process-based pictures that combine elements of painting, photography, and textile fabrication. For this exhibition he exposed store-bought fabrics to sun and moonlight for six months. Weathered and wrinkled, the material became the basis for his work.

Ms. Kupferschmidt's paintings use the changing light and repeated geometric forms of her urban landscape to evoke the passage of time. Her "Windows" series, created during quarantine, adds another layer of detachment by presenting the cityscapes as framed by windows.

Tara Donovan at Pace
"Tara Donovan: Screen Drawings" opens Thursday at the Pace Gallery in East Hampton and will continue through June 19. The works reflect the artist's interest in human perception and her ability to transform everyday objects into works of art.

The exhibition includes 22 pieces of various sizes, made during the pandemic. Ms. Donovan moves, pinches, and cuts the wires of commonplace aluminum insect screens to create patterns from the material's existing grids. The patterns shift as the viewer's position changes in relation to them, lending the works a digital quality.

Photography Showcase
The East End Photographers Group will take over Ashawagh Hall in Springs this weekend for its 34th annual Spring Exhibition, which will include work by 17 photographers. Organized by Marilyn Stevenson, the show will include traditional, digital, and alternative photographic processes.

The gallery will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5, with a reception set for Saturday from 5 to 8.

Studio and Archive Tours
The D'Amico Studio and Archive at Lazy Point, the former home and working studio of the artists and educators Mabel and Victor D'Amico, is now offering one-hour tours. They can be scheduled on Wednesdays, at either 10 a.m. or 2 p.m., or on Saturday mornings at 11.

Permanent displays and temporary exhibitions show the breadth of Mabel D'Amico's creativity: paintings, works in glass and wood, jewelry, and clothing. Many of the house's functional features, including lighting and cabinetry, were designed, made, and installed by the couple.

Tours can be scheduled by emailing [email protected] or calling 631-267-3172.

Celebrating Nature
"Interwoven: Observations in Nature," an exhibition of work by Kara Hoblin, will open the season at Grain Surfboards in Amagansett on Saturday, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. It will continue through June 26.

Ms. Hoblin, who lives in Greenport, works in a variety of mediums. The exhibition will include 20 works executed in chalk pastel, ink, and colored pencil. Her work reflects her belief in the interconnectedness of everything in the natural world.

Long Island Women Artists
In connection with its current exhibition, "Hanging/Leaning: Women Artists on Long Island, 1960s-80s," the Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton will hold a panel discussion on Saturday at 5 p.m., to be moderated by Christina Strassfield, Guild Hall's museum director and chief curator.

The discussion will focus on the Long Island cultural organizations that have supported women artists since the postwar era, including the Elaine Benson Gallery, Hillwood Art Gallery, Guild Hall, the Nassau County Museum of Art, and the Parrish Art Museum.

Trees at Silas Marder
"Trunk Show II," the first show in the United States of the British artist Graeme Black, will open at the Silas Marder Gallery in Bridgehampton with a reception on Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and continue through July 10.

The exhibition includes 36 large-scale oil paintings on raw canvas that represent trees in real scale. The layering possibilities of oil and the natural texture of cotton enable the development through successive layers into a depiction of the surface texture of bark. The intersection of branches and trunks creates a negative space on the canvas, while manipulations of scale give rise to abstractions within the figurative compositions.

Cultural Icons
Russell Young was recognized early on for his photographs of the 1970s London club scene, entertainment icons, and, in the '80s, music videos. He gave up photography for painting in the '90s, but his recent work combines the two mediums while retaining his focus on popular culture.

"Forever Young," on view through June 26 at the White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton, features screen prints using acrylic paint, enamel, and diamond dust crystals pressed into the surface of each artwork. The subjects include Elvis Presley, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe.

A reception will take place on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Shelter Island Artists
"Once on This Island," a show featuring the works of artists who have lived and worked on Shelter Island, can be seen at the Shelter Island Historical Society through Sept. 7.

Organized by Margaret Garrett, the exhibition features paintings and sculpture from the 1950s to the present day, by Karen Arm, John Chamberlain, Janet Culbertson, Willem de Kooning, Jules Feiffer, Alan Shields, Ned Smyth, and Ms. Garrett.

Despite the range of mediums and styles, a common theme emerges from the work, says the museum: the influence of Shelter Island itself.

Carolyn Conrad in Cutchogue
"Affirmation of Place," a solo exhibition of work by Carolyn Conrad, is on view at the Alex Ferrone Gallery in Cutchogue through July 10. The show presents highlights from three series of photographic works by the Sag Harbor artist, and debuts a new body of paintings and drawings. All of the pieces use houses as inspiration and subject.

This article has been modified from its original version to reflect the change of the starting time of the talk at Eric Firestone Gallery from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
