New York likes to think it is first in almost everything, but in adopting an early voting procedure, it ranks 38th among the states. Better late than never, as the cliché goes; however, early voting will be allowed this year for the first time.

The Hamptons International Film Festival got me thinking about the starring role the Rattray family’s Amagansett house played in “Annie Hall,” Woody Allen’s 1977 movie starring Diane Keaton. I haven’t seen “Annie Hall” in a long time, but much of it has stayed with me.

Dear David,
How fortunate for East Hampton Village that there is the unspoiled 24-acre Nature Trail at its heart. It hums at its own rhythm and to me represents a sort of God-given place, or natural wonder, that simply was meant to be.
I loved my nirvana on the corner where I savored chance encounters with all comers — locals, tourists, art and film mavens, even an occasional boldface name. But then began my maiden skirmish in N.Y.C.’s internecine war over booze.
The pilot who was flying the small plane that crashed off Amagansett in June of 2018, killing all four people aboard, including Bonnie and Ben Krupinski, last radioed in to air traffic control that he was at 700 feet and “coming in underneath” the thunderstorm, according to the findings of a National Transportation Safety Board investigation.
