Nancy Remkus, a guest minister at the Old Whalers Church in Sag Harbor, was among 19 Suffolk County residents celebrated as a champion of diversity on Sunday, when County Legislator Ann Welker presented her with an award after the nondenominational service.

“Music and storytelling are central to Nancy’s work,” Ms. Welker said. “An award-winning performing artist, she has written and recorded original songs that promote kindness, understanding, and interdependence. Through her writing — including her column, ‘Home,’ and her weekly blog, Simply Said — she continues to uplift local voices and shared stories.”

Ms. Remkus taught at the Sag Harbor Elementary School for 31 years.

“As an interfaith minister, I am able to bridge the sacred and the secular, celebrate diversity, and individualize spiritual celebrations,” she writes on her blog. “The beauty of the world around me continues to be my inspiration and spiritual connection.”

Since 2022, the County Legislature has honored those who aim to raise awareness of the role diversity plays in strengthening communities and those who actively promote inclusion and respect for racial, cultural, and ethnic differences.
